Ecoluxury

Being a huge fan of Scandinavian fashion, meeting the Finnish born fashion designer Camilla Norrback while in Sweden, had a great importance to me. Her brand has been a pioneer in “ecoloxury“, a term that has been widely used but in fact, originated from her. In Camilla’s words “ecoluxury is modern luxury with an ecological point of view”; most of her clothes are produced from environmentally friendly, renewable raw materials. A good example were buttery soft leggings which I would have never guessed being made of recycled PET bottles. How can something so rough and ugly turn into something so comfortable and pretty?

While visiting her boutique, Camilla promised us a -25% discount from her collection. I obviously couldn’t leave empty handed, and this Art deco/80’s inspired dress was mine to keep. According to Camilla, her clothes make the wearer feel both beautiful and proud which with, I have to agree. I wore the dress to Saturday night’s indie club feeling both beautiful and proud; not only had I bought an amazing dress but it was also a very wise purchase.

The button of the dress is made from the finest quality leather and in a Swedish factory that also manufactures the leather straps of Louis Vuitton bags. How cool is that?

Stockholm calling

This weekend has so far been one of those weekends that has lacked any sort of activity. Nothing is going on, no good clubs to go to, no parties to attend and no spontaneous shopping spasms. I have been lazy with my outfit photos as well, even though I have the Gorillapod to assist me. To be honest, I’ve only went out once today and that was to get some groceries. The rest of my day has been occupied with lounging and watching movies.

I guess some needed rest is in place considering next week I and seven other Finnish fashion bloggers are conquering Stockholm. The trip is organized by VisitSweden (kind of ironic that Sweden supports us Finnish bloggers this way and not Finland) and Minttu who is a Finnish blogger living in Sweden. I have to say I am really psyched about this trip! My brain is scanning though outfit options and what to wear during the trip and yes, I am a bit nervous too. Most of these gals I already know but there are two who I have not met yet. It shall be very interesting and I will report about it when the time comes. Hopefully, I’ll have some time for blogging while in Sweden; however,
our schedule is rather busy with designer visits, shopping and fine dining. My boyfriend will also be going to Sweden during the same time due to his jealousy of my gain. Ha!

Since there are no outfit photos from this weekend, I will leave you with this one that was taken last week. Once again I am wearing my trusted colors, black and grey – no surprises there. The days are getting really dark, so more self-taken indoor shots are probably coming up in the next months. Bare with me…

Grey black, black grey

It seems that all I have been wearing lately is grey and black. Bright colors don’t inspire me as much as they did in the summer time; however, I’m liking it because I feel like I’m going back to my roots. My inner rock princess is dying to get out, and why not let her? So black and grey is what you get, yet again.

I decided to build my weekend’s outfits based on the black & grey crop top that I introduced a few entries ago. I attended an electronic festival called ManseDance which was organized here in Tampere and since Thursday’s gig was all ambient, a relaxed outfit was in order. I went with the crop top and my acid washed jeans.

On Saturday the crop top and black & grey theme continued. I decided to wear something a bit more partyish since DMX Crew was playing some good dance tunes. Can you imagine that this very Scandinavian looking dress had been hiding in the closet of my old room for a whole year? I guess I had worn it on some weekend when I was visiting my parents and just forgot it like that. Finding it again was a very pleasant surprise; it’s like I gained a whole new dress! This little thing is really comfortable and I feel like I could wear it with black jeans to make it less partyish if I wanted to. On Saturday I wore it as it is and when Ed DMX asked the audience to come and dance on the stage, the crop top came off (I got so hot). I literally partied my top off!

DIY Waxed jeans

Waxed/black coated jeans have been around for awhile, for example Acne and Dior Homme have made their own version of these jeans. I never owned a pair due to the fact that the price was ridiculously high and none of the waxed jeans fit me. My boyfriend on the other hand has had two pairs of Acne Hex Cash black coated jeans, and even though he hasn’t ever washed them in a washing machine, the top coat has already totally worn out. I have always wondered how on earth they do that cool wax/black coat surface, so I really wanted to get into the bottom of this mystery. My boyfriend and I figured out that the paint Acne may use is acrylic paint, so we walked into the artist shop that was around the corner and did some shopping. What we found was black acrylic paint and some gloss to mix in with the paint. So, we took the stuff home and started painting the jeans with the mix and were pretty pleased with the outcome.
Here are detailed instructions on how to make your own waxed jeans, how much it costs, and what you will need. I will also reveal the results of this denim makeover (see the pictures). I chose to give the makeover to some old Cheap Mondays and my boyfriend did it to his worn out Acne’s.

1. The jeans – Since the paint dries out really hard you should use jeans that have lost their form or are a size or two bigger than usual. Otherwise you may not fit in your jeans after the makeover.

2. The Paint – Get black (or whatever color) acrylic paint, a brush that’s made for acrylic paint and if you want to add more shine to the look, get some soft gel gloss to mix in. You will also need a cup where you mix the paint and probably some cardboard to protect your floor. Art stores sell these supplies and are willing to help, just ask them. There are cheap and expensive paint options, depends how much you’re willing to spend on your project. The black paint we purchased is called Wilson & Newton: Galleria Acrylic paint, 13€. The gloss was by Golden and it is called Gel Medium Soft Gel (Gloss), 10.70€. These were huge bottles, so we could do this operation about 10 times if we wanted to.

3. Mixing the paint – Mix about 80% acrylic paint and 20% of the gloss. If you want more shiny look, add more gloss. If you want to thin then paint, add water.

4. The Paint job – Place your jeans on the floor on top the protective cardboard (or plastic). Start painting the jeans with the paint brush. Use mild strokes along the lines of the denim. You can do as many layers as you want, if you feel that the jeans didn’t get the result you wanted. My boyfriend did two layers, I did just one because I wanted a bit more rougher look. Acrylic paint dries really quickly, so you can do both sides in about one hour. After finishing both sides, let the jeans dry a few hours before trying them on, just to be sure.

5. Ta dah! – Now you got yourself some waxed jeans. Pullinging them on is like putting on jeans made out of paper, so be patient and careful. With heavy use the jeans will soften up and get more comfortable, trust me on this one.

6. Washing instructions – I don’t recommend that you wash your jeans but if you absolutely must, do it in cold water without any soap. I’m warning you though, the color will bleed! If you can, take the jeans to a dry cleaner.

7. Wear your jeans – There you got yourself a cool new pair of waxed jeans. Go on and wear them!
