Berlin is burning, part 1

I’ve promised to blog about my Berlin trip for ages now but going through over 300 photographs is not that easy, especially when you want to pick up the ones that best describe this amazing city. I’ve tried to collect here some of my favorite places to visit, hopefully you will find them useful and interesting.

My absolute favorite area was the rough East side: the art galleries, beautiful yet decadent buildings, street art and all the amazing boutiques made me instantly fall in love with Berlin. It’s no wonder that only a few days after our trip, I found myself booking flights to go over there for the New Year celebration.

The last time I was in Berlin was almost 15 years ago, and a lot has changed since. I have always been interested in the history of Berlin and we were lucky because we happened to arrive there during a very historical weekend; thousands of Berliners were celebrating the 20th anniversary of the “Mauerfall”, the fall of the wall that once separated the East and West. There were lots of open air expos with street art and pictures, and even though I’m not German, it was a very emotional experience being in the middle of it all.

Naturally, visiting tourist attractions was part of our agenda. I highly recommend the Bauhaus museum where you can see the famous German architecture and design work, Checkpoint Charlie where East meets West, the grey and massive Alexanderplatz, and the East Side Gallery featuring art on the Berlin wall. I also heard that the DDR museum is pretty interesting, though we didn’t have the time to visit it last time but will definitely check it out next time.

The fastest and the cheapest way to move around the city is to take the metro (U-bahn). Berlin is one of the safest cities in central Europe, so moving around day or night time was never a dubious. Taxis were also fairly cheap and are probably the best way to get to the airport if you are carrying heavy luggage.

More about Berlin in the next post, stay tuned!

We’re living like skeletons

This black dress always makes me think of bones, so I’ve been calling it “the fish bone dress” ever since the mailman brought it to me.

Tonight should actually be a fun night, as we might go check out the great Joensuu 1685 (they’re absolutely the best Finnish band at the moment!) or meet up with friends at the local British pub. We’ll see how the night unfolds. Enjoy your weekend!

“There’s a gaping hole in the way we are
With nothing to fill it up anymore
No flesh no blood just broken bone

A frame to hang our lives from

We’re living like skeletons

Won’t someone wake the dead in me
Won’t someone shake the dust off me

Give me water give me bread

But don’t give me up for dead
We’re living like skeletons”

Caught by Elle

This picture is from last week’s Jimmy Choo for H&M VIP night, the Elle girls caught us right when we got in (hence my goofy face). I’m wearing almost all new purchases from Berlin, and this time my outfit was heavily YSL inspired (I can’t help it, every time I look at the gray peg leg pants, all I can see is the fab YSL fall 08 RTW collection).

To completely honest, I wasn’t too keen on the shoes of the Choo collection (most of them looked cheaply made and were too blingy for my taste) but what I was actually hunting for were the accessories. I really couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw how nuts people went over the designs, girls can be so brutal to one another! Luckily nobody was fighting over my picks, so I got out without any bruises or further damage. I ended up coming home with the double wrap leather belt and a few toned down bracelets, including the ones we got in the goodiebags (I got everything I was hunting for). The best part of the night was meeting up with the other style bloggers that were invited to this event, we had a blast!

A huge thank you for Satu and Jenni at Elle for the picture, more pictures of the stylish guests can be found here.

Glass Candy, part 2

Words can’t describe how happy I was to hear that Glass Candy, a band that I’ve once traveled across the Baltic sea to see live once, was coming to play in my little hometown, Tampere. The gig was held on last Wednesday and even though the turn out was rather low key, the show was amazing and the band energetic as ever. A special shout-out to Johnny, Ida and Desire’s Meg for taking us backstage for a night to remember. Good times!
